Bamboo & Soil walls in Takeo Province

During our visit to Seng Sao's family home in Southern Takeo Province we learnt about how the locals have combined two natural materials, bamboo and earth, into a wall structure. The thin variety of bamboo which grown in the area in thick bushes in the forest is plastered with a certain kind of soil mixed with water. The soil they use for this technique can be found in the forest and must be the kind where certain insects have made their home. The exterior wall in the picture is about 6 years old and exposed to rain fall. The first photo is of an interior wall sheltered from weather which has been there already for 20 years.
